Before You Book
What is included in the rental car rate?
The rate being quoted will include the daily hire charge, limited or unlimited kilometres depending on the number of days, standard comprehensive insurance, and GST (Goods and Services Tax). 1 to 3 day hires generally have restricted kms, but differ branch to branch. All branches can tailor packages to suit. All rates are quoted in New Zealand dollars.
How is the daily rate calculated?
The calculated daily rate is on a per-day basis and is for a minimum of 24 hours. Collection and return of vehicles are during business hours. Outside of business hours, arrangements will be made by individual branches and in most cases, fees will apply for airport parking or car collection.
Is insurance included in the rate?
Standard comprehensive insurance is included in all daily rates unless otherwise specified. An insurance excess does apply, subject to age, vehicle and licence type. A $1900.00 insurance excess applies to renters aged 25 years and over. Underage drivers have an additional $500 (21yr to 25yr) and $800 (18yr to 21yr). A higher excess will apply to SUV, speciality, mini-bus, mini-coaches and trucks. Optional Excess Reduction is available. CDR (Collision Damage Reduction) can be purchased as an option at the commencement of hire. All subject to change from branch to branch.
Do I need a credit card to book with RaD?
You don’t need a credit card to book a hire car with RaD, you can use a Visa or Mastercard debit card.
All hires can be paid by credit card, EFTPOS or cash (only accepted at some locations, please contact the branch directly to find out). An additional sum is required for a security bond when a credit card cannot be supplied. This will, in most cases, be the excess applicable unless you have chosen a zero excess option, where a small bond will be required for additional days, fuel and admin charges.
Do I have to pay a deposit when booking?
This is branch-specific and will be communicated as part of the online booking process before you enter your credit card details. In most cases a deposit will be required for a Mini-bus or a Specialty vehicle. An amount no less than $100.00, or 10% of the hire. For long hires over peak season, a deposit will most certainly be required. Again, this will be mentioned at the time of booking.
Do I need an international driver's licence to rent a car in New Zealand?
International licences are accepted, as well as all English written licences. If your licence is not in English you will be required to have it translated into English before we can hire a vehicle to you.
How old do you have to be to rent a car in NZ?
To rent and drive a car with RaD Car Hire, you must be at least 18 years of age. We do have specific criteria for those aged 18-21 and those aged 21-25 so please ensure you read through all the relevant information prior to collecting your rental car.
Can I add another driver to my booking over the phone?
All drivers need to show their physical driver's licence in the branch to be added to a booking. You can call and add a driver to your booking for an additional driver charge, and you will simply need to drop into any RaD branch throughout the country before they can get behind the wheel.
Do you offer one-way hires?
Yes! You can pick up your rental car at any of our 22 branches nationwide and return it to any of our other depots. However, this is subject to vehicle availability, and a one-way fee and minimum rental period may apply.
Can I take my car on the ferry?
We know many of our international visitors want to explore as much of New Zealand as possible so we’re happy for you to take our rental cars on the ferry. This includes local ferries (like the one to Waiheke Island) as well as the Cook Strait ferries. There are two major ferry companies you can use when crossing the Cook Strait: Bluebridge and Interislander. We do have branches conveniently located in both Wellington and at the ferry terminal in Picton, however, so you might want to explore your options when it comes to getting the best deal when travelling between islands.
Do you have baby seats available for hire?
If you are bringing the young whanau on your road trip and want to secure a baby seat, we’ve got you covered. Baby seats are available from all branches throughout New Zealand, however, the cost of renting one will differ from branch to branch so make sure you add these to your online booking reservation so you will have all the cost information before you hit the “pay now” button. When the seats have been pre-booked, we can have them fitted into your rental car before you pick up, making it even easier to get you on the road.
Can I rent ski racks, snowboard racks, and snow chains?
Certainly! We want each customer to enjoy quality travel experiences. However, we provide these additional accessories for a fee. When making your car rental reservation, ask our friendly staff for more information.
What is the minimum age to hire a car?

During Your Trip
Can I extend my car hire?
If your plans change and you need to keep your rental car for longer, we recommend getting in touch with the branch where you hired from as soon as possible. Whilst we would love to accommodate all requests, sometimes it’s simply not possible during the peak season as our cars are often on a short turnaround before they are back out on the road. Where possible, we will always try to keep you on the road but we can’t make any guarantees.
Does car rental include fuel?
We will deliver your vehicle with a full tank of fuel; however, it is your responsibility to refuel the car throughout your hire. Please return the rental car to the branch location with a full tank. If this is not possible, a refuelling charge will apply.
What are the speed limits in New Zealand?
In urban areas, the speed limit is typically 30 km/h or 50 km/h. On open roads, speed limits increase to 70 km/h, and on rural or major highways, the speed limit can reach 100 km/h or 110 km/h. Always pay attention to the posted speed limit when driving in New Zealand.
What happens if I have an accident?
In the event of an accident, the first thing we want to do is ensure that everyone in the vehicle is ok. Accidents can cause a big shock, especially when they are not your fault and we ask that if you are involved in an accident, you don’t admit any liability. A police report will help to clear up responsibility and gauge who was at fault, which will help with insurance claims. Get as much information as you can at the scene, including the details of the other vehicle(s) involved in the accident. This information can then be phoned into our team, and we can start the process of filling out a claims form. If you were liable for the accident, we can’t guarantee a replacement vehicle.
What do we do in the event of a breakdown?
In the unlikely event of a breakdown, call us on the Free call 0800 73 68 23 number for the matter to be attended to. If we are unable to rectify the fault in a reasonable time, a replacement vehicle will be supplied to you.
Some locations include a roadside assistance breakdown service in their offer. Please check this with your branch when you collect the vehicle.
Returning your rental car
What if I’m running late and can’t return the car at the agreed time?
We understand that sometimes things are out of your control – traffic, accidents, and other mishaps can change your plans. We do have a one-hour grace period for returns outside of your contracted drop-off time. For returns made after this period, you will be charged a full day’s rental and insurance.
What happens if I’m running late and don’t have time to fill up the petrol tank?
If you are running late and want to ensure you get the car back at the designated time (or within the one-hour grace period), we can always take care of filling up the car for you. We will, however, charge you the cost of filling up the car, plus we may also charge a service fee. You will be informed of these costs when you drop off the car, or you can call us in advance to find out the cost.
What happens if I forget to pay a toll?
Unfortunately, if you do forget to pay a toll during your trip, you will be liable for the additional fees incurred. This varies from toll to toll, and we will forward on any additional fees that come in after you have dropped off the rental car.
Do I have to clean my rental car before I drop it back off?
The days of customer being responsible for cleaning their rental cars before drop off are long gone! We have a great team of car groomers at all our branches who ensure that every car that is returned to us is given a deep clean before it is sent back out on the road, ensuring every customer has a pristine car for their road trip. We do ask, as a courtesy to our groomers, that you do try to remove all general rubbish before you drop off the vehicle just to make life easier on the team.
