Whether they’re born and bred or new to the area, our team are your local guides when it comes to exploring new destinations throughout the country. We also like to lean on our wonderful customers to find out what they have loved about New Zealand so we can add their top tips to all our travel guides.

In this guide, we are going to be taking you through some of the best things to do in and around Napier and the region known as Hawke’s Bay – located on the east coast of the North Island and home to the country's most easterly point. Napier is the main city in the Hawke’s Bay region – home to around 67,500 people, with the population swelling during the summer months as one of New Zealand’s popular holiday destinations for Kiwis and international visitors alike.

Napier and the Hawke’s Bay are well known for three things: sunshine, wine, and art deco. Rebuilt after a 1931 earthquake, Napier was rebuilt in the Art Deco style of the period and it is now one of the most popular destinations for enthusiasts to visit. The region is also well-known for producing some of New Zealand’s finest wine, in particular red varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. No matter what you are into, Napier has plenty to offer for young and old.

As one of New Zealand’s best-known car rental companies, we’ve got some great deals available on car hire in Napier so make sure you check out our latest deals and great prices.

Napier Activities

In this series of destination guides, we are trying to take people off the beaten track, providing tips that let you experience a place like a local would. We definitely get that there are certain things that you need to do on a visit to Napier – visit the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers, or play a round of golf at the famed world top 100 golf course there, visit one of the fantastic wineries like Craggy Range, climb Te Mata Peak or go on an Art Deco tour. These are all fabulous activities that you will find in any guidebook or website.

Here are five activities that you might not have heard of in Napier:

Explore Otatara Pa Historic Reserve at Dawn or Dusk

While Otatara Pa is mentioned in some guides, visiting at dawn or dusk offers a unique experience. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning views during these times make it a special spot for locals to connect with Maori history and nature. Maori culture is such an important part of exploring New Zealand and our history and this is one of the finest Pa sites in the country to visit.

Visit the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Market on a Sunday Morning

OK, so this one you will find in a number of guide books and sprinkled across the web, but experiencing it like a local involves arriving early to grab the freshest produce and artisanal goods. It's a great place to meet locals and enjoy the community vibe. Stalls are usually set up by 6am so set that alarm early and get there before the tourists arrive mid-morning to get the best produce but also to enjoy an opportunity to chat to the stall holders.

Take a Bike Ride Along the Ahuriri Waterfront

While cycling is popular, exploring the Ahuriri waterfront on a bike offers a local perspective on Napier's scenic harborside. It's a great way to enjoy the cafes, bars, and galleries in the area. Bike hire is available throughout Napier and it really is a great way to explore the region. If you did want to head further afield, there are over 200kms of flat and easy cycle paths in and around Hawke’s Bay that make up the Hawke’s Bay Cycleway.

Discover the Street Art in Napier's Sea Walls Collection

While some guides mention the Sea Walls murals, exploring them without a guide allows you to discover hidden gems and appreciate the local art scene more intimately. Grab a map and explore on your own to find some of the lesser-known murals. Napier is full of street art and the best way to discover it is often by chance. Take a day to meander the streets and waterfront where you will be amazed by the range of artwork on display.

Enjoy a Picnic in the Sunken Gardens

While not entirely unknown, having a picnic in the Sunken Gardens is a local favourite. The tranquil setting, beautiful gardens, and proximity to Marine Parade make it an ideal spot for a relaxed afternoon outdoors. The sunken gardens are located close to the main city centre which makes them very accessible to all. There is nothing like enjoying a picnic or even just an ice cream on a hot summer day in the gardens.
