Why Visit Hamilton Gardens?
One of the RaD team recently visited Hamilton Gardens and felt compelled to write about their experience, describing the gardens as “a place for everyone”.
Hamilton Gardens is more than just a park—it’s a journey through themed gardens from around the world. Despite being a popular attraction, the gardens maintain a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere, even during busy times. The sprawling grounds make for a great workout, and there’s plenty to see and do for families, couples, and solo adventurers alike.

Highlights of Hamilton Gardens
Rogers Rose Garden
Don’t miss the stunning Rogers Rose Garden. Even in early autumn, the roses are in bloom and the smell is beautiful. This area is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic on the outer edges. Conveniently, there’s a playground and public toilets nearby, right next to Carpark 2—a smart choice for parking if you’re planning to finish your visit at the rose garden.
Themed Gardens from Around the World
Explore a diverse range of gardens, including Japanese, Egyptian, Italian, and a unique Māori garden featuring traditional kumara (NZ sweet potato) mounds. It truly feels like a global adventure in just a few hours! With 18 enclosed gardens to discover, you can easily tailor your visit to your interests and schedule.
Insider tip: This space is so large we missed the Camellia garden - we realised when we got back home and looked at the map again. Whoops!

Family-Friendly Facilities
Hamilton Gardens is ideal for families, with a fantastic playground for kids and plenty of open space. Please note that while the water features are beautiful, they’re not for swimming—remind the little ones before they get too tempted!
Café and Dining Options
Recharge at the Hamilton Gardens Café, offering a delicious menu and cabinet food. We highly recommend the chicken tacos—they’re massive and tasty! The café has both indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for enjoying a sunny day.
Insider Tip: We booked ahead as we had about 10 people in our group, and we recommend this at busy times. The food came quite quickly, though, and they were efficient.
Don’t forget to treat yourself to an ice cream from the garden’s ice cream area—just make sure you find it before you’re too full from lunch!

Tips for Visiting Hamilton Gardens
- Photography: The gardens are a photographer’s dream, with endless photo opportunities throughout the different themed spaces.
Insider Tip: We brought a backpack with us to keep our hands free for using the camera/phone, which was a good idea.
- Seasonal Beauty: While spring and summer are especially popular, autumn brings beautiful foliage and fewer crowds. Some gardens may be closed temporarily for replanting, so check the map or website before you go.
Insider Tip: Spring and Summer are popular seasons at the gardens, however, we were pleasantly surprised with how the gardens were looking in Autumn, and there were some lovely orange leaves around the trees by the lake.

- Maps and Tickets: Grab a map when you get your tickets to avoid missing out on any highlights. Entry to the enclosed gardens is $20 for adults, while children under 15 and Hamilton locals enjoy free entry. The café, lake area, and rose gardens are free to visit, but the enclosed gardens are the main attraction.
Insider Tip: They give you a map when you get your tickets, and we recommend you get one. If not, you could end up a bit confused or lost at times.
- Accessibility: The gardens are open every day except Christmas Day. Check seasonal opening hours before your visit.
Insider Tip: You can also add on an audio guide for $5. We preferred to enjoy the quietness of the gardens and to chat amongst ourselves.
