Explore the Rotorua Region

Rotorua is one of New Zealand’s most unique tourist destinations. Set on Lake Rotorua this slightly smelly (due to the geothermal hydrogen sulphide) but wonderfully exciting and interesting city is home to a magnificent geothermal area that is full of delights.

Rotorua is known for its bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers and for showcasing the Maori culture. There are wonderful naturally heated springs in which to soak and historical sites to visit.

Rotorua is also home to two of New Zealand’s best-known mountain biking parks and hosts a multitude of attractions designed to get the heart pumping. Take in a magnificent view of the area from the top of the gondola then race down the hill on a luge, bungy, jet boat, freefall or roll down the slopes in a Zorb, if it’s adventure you want there is plenty to choose from.

It is a great place to explore in a car with several stunning lakes in the area as well as bush walks, waterfalls and the historic and fascinating Mount Tarawera to visit. From 5km loops around the stunning Lake Tikitapu to a 5-hour hike around Lake Tarawera to the natural geothermal springs at Hot Water Beach there are walks for all levels.

Okere Falls is only a short drive in your Rotorua rental car from town and features a spectacular waterfall and some of the best white water rafting in the area. There are also fantastic geothermal areas to visit out of the city centre itself with Waiotapu, one of Trip Advisors' top rated Rotorua activities just to the south and Hells Gate, the most active geothermal park in the area which also offers a unique and historical spa experience just to the northwest.
