Things to do in Taupo

Mt Tauhara Hike

Mt Tauhara is a medium 2.8km walk that will take you around 1 hour 20mins to reach the top. The track is rough and some areas can be tricky to maneuver. On a clear day you get amazing views of Lake Taupo, Mt Tongariro, Mt Ruapehu and surrounding farmlands. Mt Tauhara is 1,088m above sea level and was formed about 65,000 years ago. The start of the track is approximately 10 minutes drive from Taupo central and is accessible by car.

Spa Thermal Park

Spa Thermal Park is a beautiful grass parkland area with walking tracks, playgrounds, flying fox and a natural thermal hot spring.

The popular Otumuheke Stream is located in Spa Park off County Ave, approximately 20 minutes walk or 5 minute drive from Central Taupo just past the Taupo Bungy.

From the free carpark the walk is about 500 meters along the footpath to the bridge over the Otumuheke stream. The Thermal stream and hot pools are located on the edge of the Waikato river and is the start of the popular walk to Huka Falls and Aratiatia Dam.

Under the bridge the water streams down the natural rock formations into small rock pools which mix with the crystal clear cold water from the Waikato River. Depending on how hot you want your soak, there are different rock pools for different temperatures.

A newly built toilet and changing block has been added to this area along with secure lockers to store your belongings. A river edge platform and hot spring seating area has been designed to make the most of this beautiful natural wonder.

Tongariro National Trout Centre

Taupo is home to some of the most beautiful world-class fishing spots for Brown and Rainbow Trout.

The high-country fishing hideaways offer majestic views, from the tranquil bush settings of the rivers, and streams that feed into Lake Taupo to the well-rounded rocks of the Tongariro river. You will find some of the finest fishing guides in the region - fisherman/women developing great friendships over a rod and a line.

For those who prefer the boating experience, there are many options from couples to large groups. Take in the views of the mountain’s world-class bays with amazing backdrops of cliffs going all the way down into Lake Taupo or even a waterfall.

Have kids that want to learn to fish?

A short 50-minute drive south to Turangi, we have the Tongariro National Trout Centre. There are ponds and keen fishers willing to pass their expertise to the youngsters. Pack a picnic lunch and stroll along the Tongariro riverbank - you will find an underwater viewing chamber where you can spot wild trout swimming in the Tongariro river. While there, be sure to check out the museum and learn the history of the beautiful Rainbow Trout. Go online and book at www.troutcentre.com
